CD-ROM Rainbow

If you have some CD-ROMS lying around that you don’t know how to use; here is a possible solution. Let’s recycle them into rainbows that sparkle in the sun.

This project is rated: EASY

Materials needed:
  • CD-ROM’s
  • String or thread

This project is SUPER easy. You can do this project in many different ways. However, I am going to explain one way of doing it.

Project Instructions

  1. Cut a piece of string about 30 inches long.
  2. Fold the string in half.
  3. Knot the two ends together.
  4. Insert the doubled string through the hole in the center of a CD.
  5. Pull the knotted end of the string through the loop at the other end.
  6. Draw the string tight; you should have something that looks like the image at right.
  7. Now hang the CD outdoors where the sun will shine on it (try to have the shiny side toward the house.)

When the wind blows, a reflection will chase around your yard; and when you look at the shiny side, you will see ever changing rainbows.

Optional Instructions

If you have enough CD’s, you can put two CD’s together, printed side to printed side, and then put on the string. This will give you two shiny sides facing outward. If they twist in the wind, you can see reflections and rainbows from both sides.

Now, if you have more than one CD that you can use, you can make a mobile. Use the mobile project posted on this site.
