Easy Luminaria

This project describes how to make a luminaria using an electric candle.

This project is rated: EASY

Materials needed:
  • Computer paper or card stock
  • Electric candle (battery powered is best)
  • Glue
  • Crayons, colored pencils, or markers

Project Instructions

  1. Print two copies of either the plain pattern or the pre-colored pattern if you have a color printer.
  2. Color the plain pattern to suit yourself.
  3. If you printed the color pattern, trim off the unprinted left edge of each copy.
  4. Glue one copy to the other copy, overlapping the uncolored part of one of the images.
  5. Fold the uncolored parts, at the top and bottom, toward the back.
  6. Glue these folded parts to the back of your printout. (This gives some stiffening to the edges of your luminaria.)
  7. Roll the paper into a cylinder with the printing on the outside.
  8. Glue the left edge to the right edge, overlapping the uncolored part at the right edge.
  9. When the glue is dry, the cylinder can be placed over an electric candle to complete the luminaria. (If your electric candle is the plug-in style, you will need to cut out a small semi-circular piece at the back, bottom edge of the cylinder to provide an opening for the electric cord to pass through.)

It is best if the bulb in your “candle” is at about half the height of the luminaria. However, the result is still acceptable as long as the bulb is lower than the top of the luminaria.

DO NO USE A REAL CANDLE!!

MAKE SURE THAT THE ELECTRIC BULB CAN NEVER TOUCH THE PAPER!!
