Suspending objects from a spiral mobile

SUSPENDING YOUR OBJECTS

You may suspend your objects from your spiral mobile in any manner that is convenient for you. The following describes how I have done it. You may do it like I did or use any variation that you wish.

In this project, you will have made a card stock spiral that will hold the objects that you have made. You are provided with 11 objects to make. However, if you desire, you can make up more or fewer of these objects. For example, you might choose one (or more) of these objects and make multiple copies to hang from your mobile. You might even choose to make up your own objects or use objects (e.g. photos) you already have on hand.

1. The mobile needs to be suspended.
a. Cut a length of thread.
b. Double the thread.
c. Thread both of the ends through the eye of a needle.
d. Using the needle, pass the thread through the center of the spiral (from the top side.)
e. Remove the needle and knot the thread on the underside of the mobile
f. To prevent the knot from pulling through the card stock, tape the knot to the underside of the mobile. (For additional strength, a piece of a toothpick can be placed above the knot before taping.)

2. For each of the objects:
a. Cut a length of thread about 8 inches long.
b. Double the thread and put both ends through the eye of a needle.
c. Near the top of the object, pierce the object.
d. Pull most of the thread through the object.
e. Pass the ends of the thread through the loop on the other side of the object (see picture)

f. Pull the thread tight.
g. Using the needle, pass the thread through the spiral (at a location of your choosing) from the underside to the top side.
h. Remove the needle and knot the thread (position the knot so the object will hang about 1 inch below the spiral)
i. Cut off the excess thread, leaving about a half inch above the knot.
j. Tape the knot and thread to the spiral.

The mobile can be hung from the thread at the center.
